  • Where do your crickets come from?

    We work with our own domestic cricket farms based in Oaxaca, Mexico that raise crickets for human consumption. Our crickets are currently fed a Certified-Organic grain-based diet

  • Why the name Chapafarms?

    The name Chapafarms comes from the word for grasshoppers in spanish "Chapulines". Much of the company's culture and experience was born in the context of the existing traditions in Mexico and other parts of Latin America where eating inspects is a delicacy and a more common practice.

  • Is eating crickets healthy and safe?

    Absolutely it is. Given their high nutrional value, grasshoppers in particular were identified in a recent UN study entitled "Edible insects: future prospects for food and feed security" ". Also in the USA consumers unknowingly ingest bugs or bug parts every day. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allows for maximum levels of "natural or unavoidable defects in foods for human use that present no health hazards." If you check out the FDA's "Defects Levels Handbook" online, you'll find dozens of foods listed and see that chocolate can have 60 insect fragments per 100 grams and peanut butter, 30 insect parts for every 100 grams.

  • If I see a cricket in the wild can I eat it ?

    Crickets are safe to eat as long as you purchase them from a reliable source or raise them yourself. You do not want to take them from the wild because you don’t know what sort of pesticides or other chemical sources they’ve come into contact with and you don't know what they have been eating.

  • Can Vegetarians eat crickets?

    Vegetarianism is the practice of following a diet that excludes meat, fish, shellfish, sea animals and poultry which grew as a result of nutritional, ethical, environmental and economic concerns. Eating crickets would support a vegetarian’s outlook, which would lead one to believe that perhaps there are vegetarians who do indeed eat insects but it depends entirely on the individual.

  • What are the allergens associated with crickets?

    Many of our products including Chapabars contain nuts and also are made in a factory that handles soy. Like shrimps, crickets are arthropods which are invertebrate animals having an exoskeleton, a segmented body, and jointed appendages (paired appendages). So some people who are allergic to shrimps or other arthropods have also shown allergic reactions to insects. Until more studies are done, it is safest to not consume insects if you know you are allergic to shellfish/ crustaceans.

  • What are the main points comparing crickets and beef as a protein source?

    Nutritionally, crickets have half the fat and a third more protein than beef. Environmentally, crickets need only about two pounds of feed per pound of usable meat; for beef, it takes 25 pounds of feed for the same pound of meat. Specifically crickets need one-twelfth the feed of cattle, one-quarter the feed of sheep, and half the feed as pigs and broiler chickens to produce the same amount of protein. Likewise, it only takes about a gallon of water to raise one pound of crickets, compared to 2,000 gallons of water for a pound of cow. With the growing freshwater shortages in many parts of the country and around the world, that's a significant impact.   • What are Chapabars?

    Chapabars are a raw, nutrient-packed energy bar with minimally-processed cricket protein powder and the highest quality ingredients.
